Chapter one Summer jobs

It was another hot day in New Orleans and Andy Turner was getting ready to go to work. He had a summer job at Garner’s wildlife Reserve, a beautiful swamp area in New Orleans where rare birds, fish, alligators, turtles, and other wildlife lived in a protected environment. There were a lot of beautiful oak trees that were over six hundred years old.

Charles Garner was a rich, important man, who lived alone in an old plantation home on the big reserve. He was a kind generous person who created the wildlife reserve many years ago for the people of New Orleans and made it free of charge for them. It was a popular place to go for a picnic, and it was great fun to ride the boat through the murky waters of the swamp and see the alligators, ducks, and turtles swimming there. During the summer a lot of tourists visit the reserve.

Andy Turner was a tall, handsome boy of seventeen, with dark hair and blue eyes. He and his sister , Megan , lived with their parents in a nice old home in New Orleans. Megan was a cute girl of sixteen, with dark long hair and blue eyes. Andy and Megan both went to “La Salle ” high school. Andy’s favorite subject was science and he wanted to become a zoologist. He liked playing the trumpet with the high school band and often played Dixieland jazz with his friends.

Megan’s favorite subject was English and she loved reading all kinds of books, particularly mysteries. She wanted to become a photographer and was a member of the photography club at school.
